Eduardo Anaya takes a look back at a social season that gave us great memories, outstanding events and exciting new ventures to look forward to. But just because the tourists are taking off doesn't mean the locals are shutting down! Check out Eduardo's list of three must-attend events coming up this week.

We all have a love/hate relationship with Sarasota’s tourists during “season:” They keep our economy strong, but our streets become accident-prone and the socks-with-sandals look just makes my skin crawl. After season ends, however, it doesn’t mean that the local scene shuts down. If anything, we take our town back and continue to support local business, attend great parties and sip holiday cocktails by the beach. We pretty much live in paradise and our stay-cations last all year! Here is a little recap on the past season’s hits according to PREEN & CHIC, and what to expect this week.

<img class="size-large wp-image-46476" alt="Goodwill Mardi Gras on Feb. 12, 2013, with Molly Klauber, Mercedes Mann, Eduardo Anaya and Courtney Adams.
Sarasota’s social scene is full of events and, more importantly, the familiar faces that frequent them throughout the year. Sure, other cities may boast a bigger calendar, but the acquaintance among guests and a thriving charitable character are what make Sarasota so unique.

Favorites from last season (and definite RSVPs for next year): ALSO Youth‘s 20th Anniversary Gala; Rock of Ages benefiting the Make a Wish Foundation; Key to the Cure hosted by Saks Fifth Avenue; the Goodwill Mardi Gras; Planned Parenthood’s Halloween Safe Sex Bash; the Sarasota Ballet Gala; the Cattle Barons’ Ball benefiting the American Cancer Society; the Sarasota Film Festival, Sarasota Magazine‘s “Best Of” Party and the Ringling International Arts Festival.

Enough nostalgia … it’s safe to say that this season left great memories, outstanding events and exciting new ventures to look forward to. On that note, this week holds three must attend-events, starting this Tuesday with a premiere by The SOURCE Productions. Thea’s Secret tells the story of two girls waging a war against their bathroom mirror. It’s a powerful play that examines the devastating effects of bullying, peer pressure and negative body image. This free public performance will be held in the Polo Grill & Bar’s ballroom on Tuesday, May 14 at 7 p.m.

<img class=" wp-image-46479 " alt="Eduardo Anaya at the opening of Jack Dusty, the Ritz-Carlton, Sarasota's new restaurant.
On Friday, May 17, the most fun and fashionable event for the beautiful and giving of Sarasota is back! Chic in the City: A Fashionable Gala, hosted by Designing Daughters, promises luxurious indulgences, lively entertainment, superlative awards for the divinely dressed and a Chinese raffle. The gala will be held at Sarasota’s new event venue, The Francis ballroom, starting at 8 p.m.

The 4th Annual Harvey Milk Festival celebrates Sarasota’s LGBTQ community, featuring a variety of attractions including music, film, performing and visual artists, speakers and vendors designed to engage a large and diverse audience.
Eduardo Anaya attended the Sarasota Film Festival's kick-off party, and came back more excited than ever for the 15th annual celebration of film. Read more for who was spotted, including local filmmakers whose work will be featured in this year's line-up of screenings.

When my editor handed me the opportunity to attend one of the first parties of this year’s Sarasota Film Festival, I had to say YES. Over the past 15 years, the annual celebration of film is one of the most sought-after arts events in town. Mark Famiglio, President of the Board of Directors, and an amazing staff continue to ensure that the festival gets the recognition and reputation it so deserves—all while putting on plenty of fabulous parties for locals, international visitors and invited celebrities to enjoy.

Read on to find out what it was like to be PREEN & CHIC at the kick-off …

The Sarasota Bay as a cinema-worthy backdrop for Wednesday’s kick-off party.

Soon after arriving at the glorious surroundings of our beloved Marie Selby Botanical Gardens, I already know this will be a fun-filled evening. As I walk down the pathway that leads to the party, ladies serving cocktails greet each guest in attendance … my kind of party! Sure, I enjoy a cold beverage as much as everyone else does, but the detail does not go unnoticed; from previous experience it is a good sign for a great time. I join a sea of fashionably-dressed filmmakers, media members and their guests chatting (and hopefully exchanging hot festival tips) as I step into the main event. My friend Adam Schiffman and I quickly join in and mingle, with the Sarasota Bay lending itself as the beautiful backdrop to this outdoor event. We are lucky to have this natural cinematic experience every day.

Paul Marville, Michael Krempel and Adam Schiffman.

I first encounter KT Curran (Director of The Source Productions). KT and I have worked in multiple projects together, and I am excited to learn that her short film Boost is an Official Selection for this year’s festival. Her contagious smile never ceases during our conversation for all the right reasons. KT’s award-winning work in our community brings controversial, youth-oriented topics to the main stage, and The Source Productions was the main focus for Planned Parenthood’s annual gala.

Eri and Mitch Vincent

My conversation gets (quite pleasantly) interrupted by the multiple bites being passed around. Having Libby’s Cafe + Bar as the culinary sponsor makes for one delicious party! I go over to speak with Joe Seidensticker, co-owner of Libby’s, as I know he’s excited to open up his family’s new restaurant, Louies Modern, along with the first catering ballroom in downtown Sarasota. Soon after, I speak with Jennie Famiglio about her husband’s hard work on this festival and our mutual excitement for the many films and amazing events occurring from April 5 through April 14. Her two daughters always by her side remind me about the youthFEST during this year’s festival, with an array of kid-friendly films to be screened throughout, all free for kids 12 and under.

Eduardo Anaya and Mark Famiglio.

Mark Famiglio and festival staff members announce to attendees that this year the festival will show 233 films from 30 countries, and will bring in over 100 international artists to Sarasota. They also highlight Blackfish, a provocative documentary and conversation-starter, as this year’s Opening Film, presented at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall on April 5 at 7 p.m.; and Noah Baumbach’s Frances Ha, to screen as the Closing Night Film on April 13 at the Sarasota Opera House.

After the announcements I get to meet Ashley Bonn and Allison Morton, a pair of Ringling College students who directed Lay Me in the River. The young directors tell me their short film is part of Shorts 7: SRQ Shorts (a showcase of films by Sarasota film makers). Their film tells the story of a small Southern town with heavy religious faith, seen through the eyes of the young preacher’s daughter.

Ashley Bonn and Allison Morton.

Others in attendance were: Jane Bennett, founder and owner of Be Creative Studios; Eri Vincent, SFF Marketing Assistant and national makeup artist, with her husband Mitch; Michael Kremple, owner and stylist of Michael Urban Hair Studio, with his boyfriend Paul Marville; interior and furniture design firm owner Christopher Roy McConnell, designer of Why Not Bespoke; Roz Goldberg, President of the Israel Film Festival presented by The Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee, opening March 17; independent filmmaker and TWIS contributor Anthony Paull; and Nadja Koch from SRQ Media Group.

A memory recently came to mind of a time when, over coffee, my friend and Ringling graduate Whitley Floyd and I were having one of those light conversations. I asked her, “What color do you see in me?” Silly question to most, but I like to think that people give off a color; you can feel it when you are close to them.

Whitley’s response was cobalt blue. Being an artist, she had to choose a specific color and she explained to me that cobalt blue is one of the richest pigments. I, of course, have been mesmerized by the color since. As we move through the non-existent winter, local boutiques are already looking into spring. The major trend I keep seeing in my favorite downtown shops has been a wash of blues through each and every store. Not your everyday blue color, but the cobalt blue that, according to Whitley, my inner being exudes. Take the downtown tour with me …

Samantha Wills Diamond Dancer ring ($150).

My first stop is Bohemian Bliss Boutique, with a new location at 1544 Main St. I enter the local temple for the “Gypset” known for colorful prints, precious materials and the most exotic jewelry in town. Owner Kellie Campayno tells me all about jewelry designer Samantha Wills, who was nominated for “Jeweler of The Year” by Grazia Australia alongside titans such as Tiffany & Co. Of course I have to play with every piece, and to my surprise Kellie mentions that each piece comes with its own hand-carved wood box, just the perfect touch that makes me say WOW! During my visit I also find a new denim brand called “MOTHER“ whose founder worked for 7 For All Mankind and Citizens of Humanity. The stretchy and soft material is super comfortable.

A short walk away I find myself at the eco-friendly, yet über-stylish Juno & Jove located at 1425 1st St. Stylist Ariana Franco greets me with a hug and we start chatting away about Art Basel, which we both attended last month. Through the conversation she shows me the new arrivals in the store. I immediately fall in love with a hand-dyed, silk shirt-dress from designer Olga Olsson. To complement the dress, Ariana hands me a Vision Canon necklace by Love Heals Jewelry, which has a whistle charm … so chic!

A few steps more, and my heart skips a beat with a gorgeous H. Fredriksson cobalt blue dress. Juno & Jove owner Olivia Bono walks in as I admire it; she tells me all about the designer as she pulls out yet another amazing piece of jewelry. The hug-me-tight, multi-functional body chain by Bliss Lau is quite a sight, and it adds just the perfect amount of fierce to the dress. I fall in love only further, not just with the body chain, but once again with Olivia for having such a keen eye. Thanks to her, we have a treasure trove in town full of unique and truly exceptional pieces.

My third stop has to be Lotus Boutique which has always been a established Main Street fixture for the stylish crowd. I walk in to find owner Wendy Getchell working on her latest shipment of Hammitt leather goods. She shows me the goodies and I find the Montana AM handbag in Cognac to be my favorite. Passing through the store I can’t help but play with a luxurious yet casual cashmere sweater by Enza Costa. I pair it with dark blue Citizens of Humanity jeans, a Rebecca Minkoff leather zipper wallet and the Hammitt handbag which had just arrived. The look is perfect for brunch, the movies or casual everyday errands. In the window a smiling mannequin is wearing a fun white and blue mod style cocktail dress by Alice + Olivia which is great for the office, a luncheon or one of the frequent art openings in town. Its best friend is a nude-colored handbag by Rebecca Minkoff with a studded trim. The bag will fit all your needs and the dress will give you an easy choice to wear for any event!

Change and evolution have always been exciting aspects of life. As we celebrate the new year, the major trends for 2013 are already hitting the pavement. From designers, beauty and fashion editors, to bloggers and photographers, the industry sets the tone for the year. A trusted source and a major trend forecaster is Pantone, the trusted authority in color for decades. The color Pantone chooses traditionally sets a strong trend in fashion and interior design each and every year. Allow me to show you certain ways to paint the town green without looking like you just jumped out of a Lucky Charms cereal box.

The 2013 Pantone color of the year is Emerald 17-5641. This green hue pays respect to the rare green precious stone that bears the same name. This jewel tone might seem a bit hard to wear and to some, such as the fashionable Iain Webb (Director of Sarasota Ballet), the color is completely unacceptable. It is through accessories that you can pull the color into your wardrobe without committing to a head-to-toe look, as in the fabulous Atelier Versace gown that Angelina Jolie wore for the 2011 Golden Globes.

Angelina Jolie, ahead of her time wearing Atelier Versace.

Exotic malachite can be found in the local jewelry line Clean & Well Lit.

Scarves, bags, clutches, shoes, headbands and, of course, jewels are perfect and easy ways to sport the alluring color. Don’t think that you must wear only emeralds in your jewelry; instead, go for a more casual approach and a new twist by wearing one of my favorite stones: malachite. The natural lines found in malachite make each cut very intriguing and unique.

In the beauty department, green nails are all the rage. Don’t think pastel greens, which are so passé—go for a richer and deeper hue that will give a chic new look to your nails. A green-colored eyeliner looks amazing on brown eyes, and for the daring and “eligible,” a peacock green cream shadow will create outstanding, luxurious lids.

Zoya Nail Lacquer in “Holly,” available at Simply Spoiled Boutique.

For a bold move, there is nothing like a floor-length skirt in emerald green. It may be hard to find, but consider yourself in the exquisitely tasteful set when you do. A frock or cocktail dress in the same color is always fun and daring. Keep it to silks and chiffon with a bit of sheen to make that green fabric look bright and festive at night.

Paris street style.

An emerald-green pleated long skirt.

Pantone describes their chosen color as “Lively. Radiant. Lush … A color of elegance and beauty that enhances our sense of well-being, balance and harmony.” I could not agree more! Remember that no matter what, the emerald green color is full of fun. It doesn’t matter which way you choose to wear it, it will always turn heads … unless, of course, you are in the presence of Mr. Webb.

I was blown away by her meticulous attention to detail, her color theory and most importantly her indescribable taste. Soon after that meeting, I got to see many more of her pieces, each one more beautiful than the last. On one lucky day in particular, I even got to visit her studio, which is a hub for the creative and artistic. We got talking about growing up in Florida, her family, the good old college years and her business venture. This is Clean & Well Lit, as seen by PREEN & CHIC:

Amanda Landesberg: My two most consistent hobbies through life have been reading and making jewelry. As I’ve gotten older and have read, seen, and studied more, my design sense has become more developed. After graduating from the New College of Florida and spending time figuring out my next step, I realized I am happiest when I’m creating. Since jewelry has always been my creative outlet it seemed like a natural path to take.

P&C: Why the name Clean & Well Lit?

AL: The name Clean & Well Lit comes from the Ernest Hemingway story “A Clean, Well-Lighted Place.” To me, the story shows the importance of everyone having a warm, clean place where they can feel comfortable; I want my jewelry to provide a comfort for the people who wear it. With every design I strive to make something that fits in easily with the Florida lifestyle and creates a little warmth in the wearer’s heart. I want people to feel comfortable, calm and warm when wearing my designs.

P&C: About your famous “Morse Code Bracelets” … how did you come up with the concept?

AL: Since I was young I have been influenced by literature and words; quotes have always provided inspiration and warmth in my life. With the Morse Code Bracelets I am able to take words that influence me and incorporate them into design. I love that the Morse Code Bracelets have meaning that, in a way, is kind of secret. You can wear meaningful words, know what the words mean to you, but it’s low-key and not in the face of everyone you run into on the street. The Morse Code Bracelets are really personal. Lately I have been lucky to do lot of special orders—people’s personal mantras or kid’s names in stones and color combinations that are meaningful to the wearer. It means a lot to me that people are feeling my design on such a personal level.

P&C: What is your favorite gemstone?

AL: My favorite gemstone totally changes week to week! I sometimes wonder if I got into jewelry design just to have an unlimited supply of pyrite stones; the silver color is so shiny yet earthy, you can wear it with anything! Right now, though, I am especially partial to smokey quartz; its neutral color is perfect for fall and it has a lot of sparkle! I’ve been pairing the smokey quartz with hand-dyed purple silk and it makes a really beautiful combination.

P&C: What inspires you to create your jewelry?

AL: The lines and colors of nature. The shapes, texture and shading of clouds. Art and design that I see. Meaningful words I read. Colors of the water and how they change throughout the day. The way the colors in a Florida sunset always work together, even when the color combinations seem really unusual.

For home accessories I love Jonathan Adler and the way he is able to seamlessly combine so many styles into one coherent, happy design. For jewelry designers I adore Alexis Bittar for his process and fun designs. I think I most directly take inspiration from Chan Luu and her use of materials and techniques. Locally I’m really inspired by Rachel Vanatta Noyes of Nectar Jewelry. Local artist Javier Rodriguez creates beautiful oil paintings that combine amazing technical skill and emotion. Also my fiancé, artist Zach Gilliland. We share a studio and I couldn’t ask for a more inspiring situation; I love being surrounded with his work and his works-in-progress.

As the social calendar starts rolling along, I get very excited about some of the key events of the season. It’s true that Sarasota likes to party, and we do it all year long. As soon as fall hits, the first invitations and committee meetings start to fill the schedules of everyone in town. One of the best-attended events is Key to the Cure, held this year on Oct. 20 and hosted by Saks Fifth Avenue to benefit the Women’s Cancer Care Program within the Sarasota Memorial Health Care System. Here’s how PREEN & CHIC experienced the evening …

***

The parking lot is full in the South Gate Mall. Several carts decorated in pink balloons transport guests from their cars to the entrance of our favorite store, Saks Fifth Avenue. My accomplice for the night is new cat on the block Nick Diamond. This dapper gentleman and good friend just got back in town after living in Washington. As Nick and I enter the establishment we encounter Chris Voelker, and she is looking fabulous! I saw her recently at the Ringling International Arts Festival’s closing party in what I thought was her best look yet: black and white with diamante accents in none other than Oscar de la Renta.

A couple steps and I see one of our hosts and friend, Rochelle Nigri, who welcomes us to the event and shows me where to find the bar. It’s no surprise to find Lynn and Richard Barrie searching for Lynn’s new favorite scent which she had found in a magazine. Lynn and I are quite alternative in the sea of pink get-ups; she’s sporting her usual worldly-chic outfit, contrasted by a pink-hued pedicure to go along with the night’s theme. I had opted for all-black casual, interrupted by multiple pink bracelets I got from friend Amanda Landesberg, designer of Clean & Well Lit Jewelry , and a few of my own.

After a quick catch-up with the Barries I reach the bar, staffed by Michael’s on East. The drink of choice is the ever-tasty Cosmopolitan. A few encounters with attendees: Vanessa and Maurice Opstal, Heather Dunhill, Ashely Kozel, Carrie Riley, Diana Kelly, Courtney Adams, Mercedes Mann and Tatyana Sharoubim—and then I see my “amoretti” Molly Klauber wearing what our friends call “Go-To-Girl pink” with boyfriend Ethan Biter. As Molly mingles, Ethan, his mother Tina Biter and I go check out if we won anything from the raffles, which this year’s attendees had an 80 to 90% chance in winning.

At the end of the night I decide to get my glitter on! So I sit to have a fun pink glitter ribbon applied to my wrist. As I show off my bling, my friends and I make plans to head out for a proper dinner at Jolly’s. Before leaving, I spot the multiple balloons throughout the store. I go over to get decked out by the balloon twisters, and as I wait my turn, I ask the professional to get inspired by me for the balloon creation. He hits it on the spot as he finishes twisting a crown of hearts. We all know I may not be the Queen of Hearts … but I will take a royal crown any day!

India was well represented this year through the dance presentation of “Shiva Ganga” by Shantala Shivalingappa. The performance took its roots from the customs and religious heritage of Shantala’s motherland. Based in Paris, the show had its debut in 2004 and has since been seen around the globe. Here was my experience of the work as presented at RIAF …

The dark stage is slightly lit as I take my seat at the Historic Asolo Theater. Four men seated in lotus position with a variety of instruments can be seen at the far left of the stage. After we all take our seats, the voice of Shantala comes through the speakers; her voice tells us about the first movement we are about to see. As her speech intoxicates my ears, my eyes go directly to the shrine located at the right front end of the stage which, just like the musicians, never leaves the stage.

The first sight of Shantala is blurry even though my senses are awakened by the flute and percussion instruments. The lights slowly fill the stage and Shantala is seen wearing a luxurious Indian attire of red silks and gold embroidery. The cultural richness of India is translated through her jewels, an intricate headpiece, ankle bells and red ink on her feet and fingertips, setting the mood for what is going to be an evening of discovery through Shantala’s views on Indian dance, religion and heritage.

Her dance is captivating; her feet are perfect to the sound of every beat. Her ankle bells act as an instrument as her arms and hands explain the story without words.

Shantala’s voice starts the third movement, saying, “In India we say melody is the mother, and rhythm is the father of music.” And that is the shared link among the four musicians, who each have their own time to shine as Shantala leaves the stage to change costume and prepare for the rest of the performance. During vocal and percussion solos, the whole room feels the heart of each performer. Their talents are so unique and expertly executed that at the end of each performance, the entire theater raves with applause.

Shantala comes back to the stage, this time dressed in cobalt blue and deep purple, her hair in a long braid tuck behind her belt. She dances toward a metallic platter set at the front of the stage. Her feet rest on the platter’s edge, which seems to be very uncomfortable. Through the sensuous motion of her hips, she manipulates the platter to move her body around the stage. It’s quite a spectacle. The finishing act to her performance is exhilarating as she floats on a circle, covering the stage using only her knees.

I felt deep gratitude to have Shantala and her musicians share the spirit and magic of India through their performance. Their talents give me a palpable appreciation for their deep and alluring religious devotion. As I left the theater I could see the same feeling expressed by other smiling attendees who were fully enchanted and filled with excitement. I must say it was an evening never to be forgotten.

Earlier this year I ran into one of Sarasota’s elite … It’s no joke that there are certain names in Sarasota that everyone knows, and not for some vague reason. Some of them are high-profile socialites; others are important business leaders, politicians, restaurateurs, or donors and patrons to our many local charities and art institutions. Mr. Matt Orr is known for many reasons, some which are listed above … he has not gone political yet, but some might argue that he should be in the running along with Obama and Romney.

Mr. Orr and I have met multiple times through cocktails and events. During one meeting in particular, apart from a friendly “Hello, how are you?” he enticed me with an interesting proposition.

“How would you like to be part of TWIS?” he asked. At the time I was not aware of the meaning of TWIS. Nowadays I drop the acronym like it is my job — and as of earlier this year, it is. We finalized the details of my column after a couple of random encounters and multiple emails (god, it sounds like a steamy affair) in which Mr. Orr and I discussed my involvement at This Week In Sarasota. And that, my dear, is how I started my first-ever writing gig!

PREEN & CHIC is born, and I could not be happier with the support from friends and family, but most importantly the support from our community. Since the column launched, many people around town have been asking me about my new venture. I get to add “Writer” to my resume, which has taken a while to sink in.

When talking of my exciting new venture, the first question to arise is, “What’s the name of it?” As the three words explode out of my mouth with excitement in my eyes, I often notice a huge question mark on the face in front of me. Some do not ask and pretend to know; others smile and nod, saying “great name;” and the few brave enough to confront humiliation actually ask … “What does ‘preen’ mean?” So once and for all, let’s investigate the roots of the word itself. Because let me tell you … I LOVE TO PREEN!

Google the word, and birds, a designer fashion label and a garden weed killer come rolling down the screen. Word of advice: Google is a great tool, but sometimes it does not understand your query. Especially if you’re looking looking for a remedy — Doctor Google will say you’ll die in 24 hours and there is no cure for your rash or slight cough. Let’s ask the dictionary instead! The word “preen,” according to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary and Thesaurus, means:

Birds preen, we all preen!

1. (of a bird) To straighten and clean feathers with the beak: “Robins preened at the pool’s edge;” “The pigeon preened her feathers.”

2. (of a person) To devote effort to making oneself look attractive and then admire one’s appearance.

Just a man (not yet a pigeon), I and many of you fall under the number two category of preen. It sounds lavish and obscene, but we all do it. Taking a bath, combing your hair and brushing your teeth are examples of preen. Standing blow-dry appointments three times per week, bathing in Evian water and having a personal makeup artist are also more intense options to preen. Either way, we all preen and some of us are more or less obsessed over the process. Some choose to preen alone; others enjoy the company and suggestions fellow preen addicts may have. My goal is to be interactive and have you as the readers ask away your sartorial questions, engage in virtual conversation with each other and make all of us have the most PREEN & CHIC time we can have.

Happy to have put to rest the meaning of the first word to the title of my column, now I want you to read more about “What is Chic?” This very entertaining investigation from Style.com (aka my bible) will put you up-to-date with the commonly used word. Tell me how you preen and share your own take on the word! Your comments and suggestions are always welcome. Make use of this public forum in any way you please. So go and keep on preening! I sure will not stop.

It’s been a couple months since my last confession. As many times before, I did not repent and actually went ahead and compiled all the summer sins. One or two new additions to the grooming kit had to be added. While pondering in that little group of girls that, just like me, are obsessed with products, I couldn’t help but think of the junkiest of them all. It’s hard to pick one gal, since all of them are masters at the craft of conjuring up the “fountain of youth.” However, on a Sunday night not long ago, I was at a mandatory weekly dinner party. Having been at the beach all day, I had to shower at my friend’s house before the rest of the foodie gang arrived. As many other times before, I entered the beauty temple that Molly Klauber has created for herself. It is no secret that the “it girl” I call my BFF is such a natural beauty, but just like the rest of us, she must perform up-keep to always look as PREEN & CHIC as only MK can.

Molly Klauber's Treasure Chest

I am given a plush towel and bathrobe as she quickly opens her cabinet to find “my” toothbrush and goes into her special “sample drawer,” which is stocked to the nines with all things beautiful. Molly instructs me to feel free to try anything in the multiple drawers and cabinets before she leaves me to the experience of a five-star spa. With several choices for hair care and up to 10 different body products to choose from just on her shower floor, I am extremely anxious to try them all. I finish getting squeaky clean, but now it’s time to look around for moisturizers and hair products. I am astonished as I find not one or two of each, but six storage units full of multiple luxury products for every single need a product junkie may have. As I step into the kitchen to start cooking, I ask Molly a few questions about her all-time favorites beauty products. The Go To Girl is an expert in this field, and she has enough knowledge to receive an honorary doctorate. So it’s no surprise that she smiles, happy to share her secrets.

P&C: Tell us one of your homemade beauty recipes.

MK: Avocado and Buttermilk Mask:

1/4 very ripe small avocado
Buttermilk

Purpose: It’s incredibly nourishing and moisturizing with a slight bleaching action which leaves your skin velvety! You can also use it in your hair, and I recommend leaving it in your hair for 30 minutes to help with frizziness and dryness.

Scoop out the avocado pulp and mash it with just enough buttermilk to form a creamy paste. A mortar and pestle or small bowl and fork work equally well for this. Warning: The mask can be a little runny, so keep your attire in consideration! Apply the mask with upward strokes to your face, neck and décolleté. Rinse after 20 to 30 minutes.

P&C: Biggest beauty advice ever received?

MK: Use your ring finger when applying eye cream instead of your pointer finger, because it’s too strong and stretches your skin more. And slightly lick your wine glass before you take a sip so your lipstick doesn’t come off on the glass!

Once a month, an acquaintance and client from work comes along and catches up with me. Sometimes we talk about her dog; other times we talk about her upcoming wedding, of which I know every detail except for the nuptial night (I have class!) and what the invite looks like, since I have not been invited. Don’t gasp, I am only an acquaintance! As this person leaves my workplace I always hear, “Don’t work too hard, Eduardo … ”

Every single time I hear those four words it makes me cringe. I find it to be patronizing, as well as the mantra for the lazy and inept. I pride myself in working hard, but every hard worker needs to blow off some steam and find a sanctuary to forget about the deadline, the project, the co-worker or the boss. In my case, sometimes a drink or two and the company of good friends helps the cause. And who says you must spend a fortune to have a good time? Or that you must stay home with the cheap bottle of wine? Allow me to take you on a journey through some of my favorite spots for after-work adventures.

The "Berry-Go-Round" mini martini flight at Michael's On East.

The work week begins and you’re sad the weekend’s gone. You’ve got a million voice mails and tons of emails waiting for a response — or you make a great sale or lead a successful meeting. If you want to cry your heart out from stress or celebrate in the day’s accomplishments, there is no better place like Michael’s On East Piano Bar & Lounge. Although a happy celebration is more welcome than tears, everyone’s invited to visit the restaurant between 5 and 7 p.m, especially on Monday nights. When you show up at the bar, you must say Monday’s unique “Secret Word” in order to enjoy the special for the evening. It’s one deal per person, so you can always share the word with all your friends and family. Michael Klauber himself sends a Facebook invite every Monday morning with the secret word and the special deal you will be getting. MOE has recently updated their lounge menu which is fantastic! Some of my new favorites are the “Berry-Go-Round” martini flight and the Peppery Pear Martini — plus a cold glass of champers never fails to satisfy.

The lounge at Selva Grill.

Tuesday is Wine Lovers’ Night at Selva Grill, located on Main Street in the heart of downtown. Every week you can get a fabulous bottle of vino for half the price! They will present you with a selected wine list that shows you the week’s specials. Plus, for the whole month of July you can get 25 percent off your dinner from 5 to 7 p.m., Sunday through Thursday, with the Summer Early Diner’s Card which can be picked up at the restaurant free of cost. That’s still not all! $5 specialty cocktails and deals on beer and wine are offered every day from 5 to 7 p.m. as well. All these deals make it hard not to visit the Peruvian gem at least once a week.

Craving the big city steak house but can’t leave town? Visit Hyde Park Steak House located on the corner of Lemon and State Street and get your big city drink on. The staff is always very professional and dressed like none other in town. With 50-plus choices for wine by the glass and a cocktail menu that offers drinks and martinis for $4, $6 and $8 … it is a deal you can’t help but take right away. I regularly sip on their pomegranate martinis and indulge in their Kobe beef sliders and fries. Don’t forget to always get their peppercorn aioli on the side and ask for two servings. I can never get enough of it! Make Hyde Park your Wednesday night destination … the cow-hide printed chairs and comfortable booths are waiting for you.

<img class="size-medium wp-image-20244" title="Delicious Sushi at Pacific Rim. Photo by Chad Spencer.

Hungry for a little taste of Asia? Pacific Rim might be the cuisine you are looking for. Enter the restaurant and you will encounter a most beautiful crowd, from the host to the servers, to the guest and the owner. The place is definitely happening every night of the week. Owner Veth Senenoi, usually dressed in Burberry, always greets you with a smile and makes sure you being taken care of. The music and the drinks start flowing as happy hour specials are offered from 4:30 to 6 p.m. The deals consist of a big list of $4 specialty martinis and small plates, as well as $3 makimono rolls — including the spicy tuna roll and the Mexican roll, which are some of my favorites. Bring co-workers and friends after work; geisha attire not required!

Stemless martini at Jolly's.

Now the week is over, and you are looking for the place to start the weekend early, get your tie off your neck and leave the two-piece board meeting suit at home. Jolly’s downtown on Palm and Main is the place to see and be seen on Friday nights. Partner Giovanni Migliorini tells me that their happy hour deals go on every day during the work week from 4 to 6 p.m. Relax and enjoy all their wines by the glass for only $4. Other daily deals include martinis for $6, beer for $3 and premium spirits for only $5. Their mouth-watering, fresh pizza starts coming out of the wood oven at 5 p.m. You know you’ll need it if you plan to stay until the party is over.

We have covered a tour de force! From the empire that is Michael’s on East, to the exotics of Selva Grill and Pacific Rim and more. Now you can celebrate your hard-won accomplishments or throw back your sorrows and wish your boss death without breaking the bank. At least you bet you will be doing it in style and at affordable prices any or every night of the week.

Your turn. What are some of your favorite things to order at these fabulous establishments? Or your must-vist places to relax after work?

How can you walk on First Street without ever noticing the beautiful window displays at Juno & Jove? Not only are they extremely creative, but they also display a fresh take on style. Olivia Bono is the owner of this eco-friendly boutique, which launched in 2006 and has since acquired amazing reviews and a local and international fan base. I love the store’s ethnic pieces and bold accessories; the hard-to-find designers bring luxury without harming Mother Earth. I caught up with Olivia this week and asked a few questions as she was getting ready for this weekend’s Best of Downtown Boutique Summer Sale!

PREEN & CHIC: In a pocket-sized statement, how did the store come about?

Olivia Bono: While studying EU law in Brussels, I became accustomed to shopping at stores with public philosophical statements. I knew when I came came back to the States I wouldn’t have that luxury, so I thought I’d create my own curated collection of sustainable goods.

P&C: Why name the store “Juno and Jove?”

OB: Juno and Jove are the Roman names of the Greek gods Hera and Zeus … Juno represented morality to the Romans and Jove always wanted the best in everything, hence we find in their pairing the marriage of morality and craftsmanship!

P&C: Who do you go to for fashion advice?

OB: Fashion is about individual expression so I generally trust my instincts, but I’m inspired by the street style I see in my travels.

Style heaven at Juno & Jove.

P&C: Where do you like to shop?

OB: I try and shop downtown Sarasota when I’m here, but admittedly, I bring home many wondrous things as I am out hunting for Juno and Jove’s next collection.

P&C: Any trend you are embracing this summer?

OB: Hello, maxi skirts.

P&C: Top tracks you have been listening to lately?

OB: For a retro vibe, “Psychic City” by Yacht. On repeat I have ”It Began With a Burst” by Kishi Bashi … the beginning of my happy music for the long summer months! To keep up with Juno & Jove music, subscribe to our playlist on Spotify, Juno and Jove Jive!

P&C: Latest obsession?

OB: Periwinkle. I can’t get enough of it … anyone know where I can find it on a chesterfield-style sofa?

Juno and Jove not only offers men’s and women’s clothing, accessories and gifts at the flagship store in downtown Sarasota, but they can also be purchased online any where, anytime. The Best of Downtown Boutique Summer Sale featuring Juno and Jove, Bohemian Bliss, Lotus, L.

Well, if not a saint, I suppose I’m a sinner … a groomed one at that. Today I confess my slight addiction to grooming rituals and come clean as a top-notch product junkie. I am not a Gillette kind of guy. It is true that I partake in many conversations in which usually girls—who am I kidding?—ALWAYS girls and I rave about our favorite new product, our deserted island top 10 essentials or the products or experts that have changed our lives. A bit dramatic, you may think, but it is all about keepin’ it PREEN & CHIC.

Master Stylist Jim Brooks and Eduardo Anaya.

If I must confess, then I am not going down alone. I have partners-in-crime, you see, and they all can be found at The Met Day Spa & Salon. The space itself is supreme luxury, your appointment comes with a complimentary glass of champerz and it has been my go-to-relax-spot for years. I have been a repeat offender since the tender age of 16, being the only kid getting monthly manicures and facials. My coif has gone through many shears, multiple stylists, hundreds of styling products and when it comes to ‘poo and conditioners I have been around the block. But for the past year I have stopped my salon-whore ways and have become faithful to master hairstylist and dear friend Jim Brooks at The Met. The man sporting clear frames and Gucci loafers, who is always dressed as if he’s in a “Welcome to Connecticut” poster, is the kindest and most knowledgeable stylist in the city. At my last appointment Jim he said, “A stylist with shears is like being a sculptor with a chisel.” Many other stylists rave over his work, saying, “It’s like seeing butter melting,” and his client list is a VIP dinner with Sarasota’s art scene, donors and power players.

Polish beauty Justyna Musial and Eduardo Anaya.

Good genes and Sexycan roots have blessed me with decent skin, but I do suffer from breakouts now and again, and from dehydration Mondays every week. In order to maintain a healthy complexion and enjoy a little pampering I go to Justyna Musial at The Met. The Polish beauty treats you like royalty and makes sure you leave with supple, hydrated and detoxified skin. Apart from facials and treatments, she also offers waxing services.

Fairy godmother Isabella Rubi and Eduardo Anaya.

With The Met’s Isabella Rubi I don’t have to speak about my nails so we can go straight to “the goss.” After many years of sitting at her chair, my fairy godmother knows how I like my nails done: very, very short, square and buffed to death. Her manis and pedis are the best in the city! You can bring your own colors or she will create a custom blend for you.

Dermalogica's Daily Microfoliant,
$50, The Met Salon & Spa

At home-rituals consist of everyday grooming. I keep my locks healthy by using Frederic Fekkai‘s shampoo and conditioner. For styling, whether I am embracing my curls or looking to achieve a slicked-back look, I use Frederic Fekkai’s Essential Shea Pot de Crème. It assures soft-to-the-touch styled hair all day long! For skin upkeep, I will always recommend Dermalogica‘s Daily Microfoliant (you can find it at The Met). It is up there in the holy “changed-my-life” product list. The gentle rice powder mixes with a few drops of water to become an enzyme-based exfoliating paste that can be used everyday or 2-3 times a week. It gets rid of dead skin cells, brightening the skin and leaving it smooth. For everyday cleansing I love Kate Somerville‘s Gentle Daily Wash (Simply Spoiled Boutique) and I also like Cetaphil‘s Gentle Cleansing Bar (any old drugstore will do) as a great alternative when the budget gets tighter. Even though it looks like a soap bar, Cetaphil is soap-free, will not irritate your skin and it won’t clog your pores.

Philosophy's Take a Deep
Breath Moisturizer, $34, Simply
Spoiled Boutique

Right after the shower first thing is moisture. There’s nothing worse than applying moisturizer on dry skin. It should be pat dry, but slightly damp. I hit two birds with one stone when using Coola’s Face SPF 30 Cucumber Organic Moisturizer. During the summer I also like light-weight, such as Philosophy‘s Take a Deep Breath oil-free energizing oxygen gel cream moisturizer; and for the winter, if you have dry skin or are worried about signs of aging, you must try the “Mac Daddy” of them all: Kate Somerville’s Deep Tissue Repair is everything you need in a jar, but it will cost ya! All three can be found at Simply Spoiled Boutique.

Lalicious Peppermint Sugar Souffle Body Scrub, $34, Simply Spoiled Boutique

When it comes to lathering up, I’m not a body bar person; I usually go for a goodquality with a great aroma. Currently I am using the Pré de Provence Shower Butter in Brazil Nut, which converts from a heavy butter to a creamy lather. Scrubbing the sins away is a must in order to have smooth skin, remove old skin cells and bring a zen moment to your week. Giovanni Organic’s Hot Chocolate Sugar Scrub (Whole Foods) or Lalicious’ Peppermint Sugar Soufflé Scrub (Simply Spoiled Boutique) are my favorites. My preference for sugar scrubs over salt scrubs is because the latter tends to be more oily. Check out the scrub bar at Simply Spoiled Boutique to pick the perfect match for you!

Chanel Allure Sport
Stick Deodorant, $21.50,
Saks Fifth Avenue

I do grow one or three hairs on my face, so shaving is not an every day thing for me. But I do whip out the razor at least every other day in order to maintain a sharp look. I like The Art of Shaving shaving cream in the soothing lavender scent, and in order to give back I like to use a heavier moisturizing cream or The Art of Shaving After Shave Balm containing vitamin C. The whole line of different products available in four scents can be found at Simply Spoiled Boutique. Another one of my sins is designer deodorant. I can’t help myself—go ahead and crucify me if needed. Currently I am using Chanel’s Allure Homme Sport, which can be purchased at our local Saks Fifth Avenue. Plus Blanca, with a smiling face, always hooks me up with the latest samples of perfume so I can have a pocket-size fragrance handy in my bag.

After laying my sins out on the table I do not feel liberated, but reminded of the products I need to stock up on and the future appointments I have on my calendar. You know my grooming rituals … but now it is time for you to confess. Junkies, come clean with me: Proclaim your best products yet and out your team of experts. Remember that most stores tend to have samples handy, so if you’re not completely sold on the idea, always grab a sample to try the product. Let your freak flag fly, one scoop at a time!

It’s a Thursday night and I am leaving work early. It does not happen often, but this boy has plans! It is only the most fabulous event of the year, and all the young and beautiful faces of Sarasota are congregating for an amazing cause: the Designing Daughters Gala, to take place at the Sarasota Yacht Club—this year with a nautical theme.

Victoria Blooms flower creation.

I make plans with shoe maven Tatyana Sharoubim to meet at her place and jet off to the event. I step into her gnome house at Burns Court and I am encountered by her two pooches who are wild to see “Uncle Eduardo” (I’ve got lots of nieces and nephews). As kisses and hugs are exchanged, Tatyana is running around in a gorgeous leather and silk dress getting ready for the party. She looks me straight in the eye and asks, “Is it too much?” I am all for the sexy outfit, but my girl is not content with her choice! So back to the closet it is for this homo-sensual. Luckily, this time I have enough room to hang out in there, since Tatyana’s closet takes her whole guest bedroom. No joke, her second room is her closet! After a quick scan we find the perfect cocktail dress: an emerald green, pleated silk, above-the-knee number by Parker. As Taty changes I spot a gorgeous pair of heels with Swarovski crystal peacocks. They are just what we need to make the outfit perfection. A little blush, some mascara, her electric blue Casa del Rio pouchette, and we are out the door!

Checking out the crowd.

When we arrive at the Yacht Club, the scenery is fun and vivacious.Everyone is in COLOR! No black and white here. The pool setting overlooking the bay is an amazing sight and the pretty people are just beginning to arrive. The tables are decked with pink branches and flowered heels provided by Victoria Blooms … HEAVEN! Walking around saying hello to familiar faces, I find one that is not so familiar … and she has cupcakes in hand, so I walk over and introduce myself.

The winning cupcakes from The Short
Giraffe Mini Confections and Catering.

A pleasant “Hello, my name is” and I snatch one of the delicate confections. It’s love at first bite. I can’t stop eating the cupcakes all night. Thing is, I am not a sweets person—unless we are talking cocktails. Not one, two or three, but I probably eat a whole batch! Quickly I get all the girls tasting and raving as we stuff our bellies full of the yummy treats. At some point designer Diana Kelly and I battle to name the best-tasting treat! She loves the shortbread cookies, while I’m all for the raspberry cupcakes. After a group of attendees get a taste of both, my palate wins! Best of all, these morsels are not pricey. Leigh Growney, owner of The Short Giraffe Mini Confections and Catering, tells me that a batch of twelve mini-cupcakes is only $15.

In the middle of grabbing my tenth treat, I spot a group of young girls coming up the stairs toward the pool. Something out-of-the-norm at this kind of event is about to happen. The flower bed that has been floating on the pool all night suddenly is lit. The music starts as one by one the little girls jump in the water to give us a synchronized swimming spectacle. Everyone in attendance applauds in awe.

I myself don’t leave the event empty handed. The Three Kitcheneers were in attendance giving awards for the night. As I reach over to find my scarf, I am named “Best Dressed Male!” My blue colored get-up wins me a prize from T. Georgianos Shoe Salon. Happily I snag my prize and come back to my friends who, after a few more minutes, decide it’s time to move the party downtown. Our destination: Jolly’s, the lounge at Cafe Epicure. I get to ride in style. After all, it is only decent to leave the event in a Bentley convertible if you are named “Best Dressed.” I must say, there is something about riding over the John Ringling Bridge in a convertible luxury car … it always gives the best blowout!

Found yourself just a few days away from Mother’s Day with not clue on how to celebrate your mom? No need to panic! PREEN & CHIC has you covered. From brunch and dinner to those local spots that have the “it” gifts, we’ll highlight some locally owned shops that will have you coming for more all through out the year. Best of all, they are just a few blocks away from each other.

The first order of business is where to eat! And eat here has a spectacular deal for us. I could not believe it when, while sipping on Malbec a few weeks ago, I read a little sign saying, “Mothers Eat Here for Free.” I just had to make it public. I’ve been told by the restaurant that on Mother’s Day, any mother who comes along with a guest or her whole family will dine for free, including dessert. Alcohol will not be covered, so buy your mom a drink or have her hydrate on water all night long—you don’t want her to “lose elasticity!”

Enter for my brunch of choice: Station 400.

My favorite brunch spot in Sarasota is Station 400 with locations downtown (make sure to get a table on the outside patio) and in Lakewood Ranch. I always get the Truffle Eggs Benedict with Parmesan fries and extra Hollandaise on the side.

Another must-do, unless your mother is allergic, are flowers. In the short time since it opened, Victoria Blooms has become the “it” shop when it comes to flower arrangements. This Sunday there will be a nice variety of ready-made arrangements to pick up and go, not to mention gift baskets, terrariums and potted orchids or dish gardens. The shop will be open on Sunday from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m., but it is best to call ahead. Feel free to stop by to build your own creation, get creative and play with the warm, friendly staff.

Now, I know the Preen & Chic moms would love a little something new in their closets. I peeked into Lotus today and found a few gifts that any mother would love to have. Rebecca Minkoff is a luxury, yet affordable line of leather goods. The brand’s handbags and accessories are a must for every woman. I love the Large Zip Wallet ($195.00) in classic white and black! And the “Mac Clutch” ($395.00) is an amazing everyday bag for any age. Also in the shop I found a pair of Pashminas ($68.00) in Hermes Orange and Indian Pink that caught my eye. Each one will add a punch of color to any outfit, great for those nighttime events.

What woman does not like to look her best? A little pampering is always in order, and L. Spa is the place to go for a mani/pedi. Last week I cheated on my favorite nail technician, Isabella from The Met Spa & Salon, and went with my friend Zara Barrie to her favorite spot. L. Spa in Burns Court is where I met Karen and Reba. Both girls were amazingly entertaining, offered us a complimentary glass of champers and, most importantly, both were extremely talented! Being in the beauty industry for five years has given me a snob-like attitude with beauty services. I must say that Isabella was my one and only, but Reba and Karen are right up there with my favorite girl. Both The Met and L. Spa offer gift cards or side-by-side appointments in case you want to go with your mom. When it comes to hair, the spot downtown is Nuovo, an Aveda concept salon. With many stylists to choose from, you will always find your perfect match! Make it a blowout or a whole new look—you will always be in safe hands.

A sample of the Meira T Collection ($500 to $2,500).

While mom is getting her hair done, you must walk over to a temple of luxury nearby. Liebe Smith-Gamble, style icon and owner of June Simmons Jewelry, showed me a couple of fun treats a mother will not be able to resist. As I am entertained by all the stunning pieces, Liebe brings me over to the Meira T collection. This beautiful line has great pieces for layering that can be worn every day and still capture a unique design. They are perfect for the mom on the go: lightweight, comfortable and yet really fashionable.

Last but not least, this weekend is perfect to take your mama out on the town! A few upcoming must-attend events are at the third annual Harvey Milk Festival at Five Points Park from May 10 through 12. The festival’s mission is to promote emerging artists in music, art, and film while raising awareness of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) equality.

Trying to get fit? Friday is Tuck.Sip.Shop!! Join Pure Barre, Stella and Dot and Simply Spoiled Boutique for a fun day of tucking and shopping in honor of Mother’s Day. Please remember to reserve your spot for the special class at 10:45 benefiting Mothers Helping Mothers—you can call the studio or reserve online. And who says mothers’ special day is over on Sunday? Next Thursday, May 17, it’s time to Sail Into Summer with Designing Daughters for their second annual Fashionable Gala taking place at the Sarasota Yacht Club. It will be a night of fashion, food, open bar and entertainment. Last year, yours truly was auctioned off at this young and happening event!

It is no surprise that for the stylish crowd, any color comes in a variety of hues. Red or green are not just colors, but instead they come in names such as candy apple red, or sea foam green. It seems like we always have to complicate things. As my friend Zara Barrie (local fashion icon and Assistant Director for The SOURCE Theatre) and I were getting ready to go out for dinner, the conversation started over what to wear this season. We are known not to only theme out our looks, but to also make some kind of announcement. Any time last year you could hear us both blasting out “We are going tribal for Fall” and during our brief Winter we did Rock and Roll chic As we got to Spring, which in Florida feels just like Summer, that night we chose the colors for the season in the closet. I went for not just yellow, but a very bright and bold hue of the color which I’ve named chicken yellow in homage to the little chicks that I’ve only seen in cartoons. While Zara opted for what she calls tangerine orange, which is very powerful and exploding in pigment. Later I discover that our instincts were just right! Our choices are the top colors for Spring 2012 according to the very well respected Pantone Report, who publishes their color picks for every season.

The best way to start wearing this range of fun and vibrant colors is to start picking out accessories or jewelry in your favorite tones. You can start with sunnies, a handbag, jewelry, or a scarf.

NEPAL BRACELETS (Simply Spoiled Boutique $10.00 each 3 for $25.00 )

CASA DEL RIO BESSIE POUCHETTE, WILD AMERICAN GATOR IN BLUE(T-Georgiano's $400.00 other colors available )

RAY BAN VINTAGE LEGENDS COLLECTION IN CRYSTAL ROSE (Sunglass Hut, Southgate Westfield Mall $160)

For someone in the middle ground, a printed top or a dress is best suited to have the color over a white background or you can opt for solid colored tops or bottoms that you can introduce to your established wardrobe.

SOLID POWER COLOR

Now for the ones who like to get more risky, color blocking is your thing. Pairing single tone separates is a fun way to have the opposite (or the same) sex notice and the stylish crowd applauding. It can be as simple as different hues of the same color in a gradient from head to toe going from light to dark or viceversa. Mixing up a multitude of colors that compliment each other or are next to each other in the color wheel is the way to supreme fashion justice. While it sounds risky, it is not impossible. Some easy alternatives are turquoise and tangerine, orange, or burnt orange and red, and there is something genius about Hermes orange and Indian pink!

TURQUOISE AND TANGERINE

ORANGE AND BURNT RED

HERMES ORANGE AND INDIAN PINK

Don’t be afraid to embrace color this season. Like anything new in the mirror, you may be shocked to see yourself out of the norm. Introducing color will not only give you aspring-summer edge, but will also be a smart way to update your closet with just a few new pieces to your wardrobe. Start small, or go bold! If anything, no one looks bad wearing color and at least you’ll break the mold of black and white.

Great events happening this weekend are: Tonight’s opening to the last Sarasota Ballet of the Season “Theatre of Dreams”. Performances occuring Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The Cheesey events occuring all day this Saturday April 28th for the Gulf Coast Cheese Fest and nothing better than Lido Beach Sundays, best of all it is FREE!

The best compliment I’ve ever received was being mistaken as a ballet dancer. The thing is, they are beautiful creatures. Every muscle is constantly being worked, there is not an inch of their bodies that is not beautifully sculptured – you know, this little Mary may not touch, but loves to look!

Last Friday night I arrived at the Sarasota Opera House dressed in black tuxedo pants, white shirt with Diamante cuff links and my favorite ultra fitted white jacket… Be aware I went tie-less for a little rebellious edge – a hopeful chance to charm one of the creatures, plus a little bare bronzed skin, never killed anyone! My ticket gets handed to me by one of the staff members since I am running late and in a rush to get in — Tonight I am seeing ‘My Way’, the sixth performance in The Sarasota Ballet Company‘s 2011-2012 season. The evening showcases the works of George Balanchine, Dominic Walsh & Twyla Tharp. As I walk down the right aisle, Jim Brooks is on the other side of the row. He is a ballet aficionado, master hair stylist at The Met Salon & Spa, and dear friend of mine. We meet halfway to take a seat and after a brief and warm welcome we are silenced by the long list of donor names and sponsors. Let’s not kid our selves, I am no art critic, but if you ask did I enjoy it? My answer, like always…. I LOVED IT! In the past 3 seasons I have been going religiously. Time after time I am left inspired, and left feeling lucky to have such talent living in our town! Plus, seeing some of the dancers at Ivory on Thursday nights has never hurt the eyes!

Emily Walsh & Victoria Leopold, photo by Cliff Roles

The fashion moment of the night came in the vintage Oscar de la Renta dresses that were worn by the dancers during ‘Nine Sinatra Songs’ and the ballroom dancing shoes which had to be flown in from London. During the first intermission I spot the Walsh family, owners of The Observer Group, who are seated in the row behind me. We share a quick hello followed by a compliment on Preen & Chic’s launch. Emily Walsh wore a very chic sky blue cocktail dress which was cinched at the waist by a patented black leather slim belt. The color of the dress complimented her luscious locks (we all know pastels are amazing on red heads!) Victoria Leopold was also in attendance, but she opted for a very classic color palette. The black and white silk-back caped Halston Heritage cocktail dress was ultra modern. She tells me it was purchased at The Met. Black and white heels and a black calf skin Chanel bag finished up the best dressed look of the night. Unfortunately, she shared her need to take a sabbatical from her duties as board member to many of our local organizations. I really hope she continues her charitable work very soon. After all, the Sarasota Opera House main hall does hold her name and its not just because of her charming looks.

As it is custom, Jim and I grab a bite to catch up and discuss the night’s performance and the social mingling for the night. Just a block away from the Opera House we find Selva Grill, one of downtown’s hot spots which offers exotic Peruvian cuisine. This season Selva added five new drinks to their cocktail menu to benefit the Sarasota Ballet. Sitting outside of the restaurant sometime last year director Iain Webb, a group of dancers, and I were discussing future cocktail names for the arts menu. That is how the “Pointe-tini”came to be. I was honored that they took my opinion into consideration. Twenty percent of sales from the designated cocktail list goes directly to my favorite art form. Next time you are there order the drink I baptized! The Pomegranate Pointe-tini tastes better without the sugar rim.

The next and final performance for the Sarasota Ballet’s 2011-2012 season is ‘Theater of Dreams’ which runs from April 27th to April 29th at the FSU Center for the Performing Arts in which Kate Honea, Ricardo Graziano, Ricki Bertoni, and Jamie Carter, all current dancers for the company, will be doing world premieres as well as a performance of Octavio Martin’s ‘On The Outside.’ Add those dates to your calendar and purchase your tickets now! You bet Preen & Chic will be in attendance. Also, take note, because tonight is the Sarasota Film Festival’s Cinema Tropicale taking place at the Sarasota Yacht Club. Who does not want to mingle with film makers and aficionados alike. Get your self Preened up in your best tropical chic to the island-themed event which ticket includes food, drinks, and the amazing scenery that only Sarasota Bay has to offer! The dancers may not be around for that one, but yet again I make a good look alike.

Let’s talk beauty, fashion, art, music, living, food, drink and our social scene … because let’s face it! We are much more than clothes! PREEN & CHIC is a lifestyle, and I’ve got the key to our local hot spots, the trendy PYTs, the beauty and fashion gurus and of course an intimate setting of friendship with all the movers and shakers in town. The taste-makers have it, and I will share their secrets with you. So watch out, Sarasota! A new voice has arrived at TWIS, and this time I come armed with short shorts and bow-ties. PREEN & CHIC is your way to be in touch with what’s hot and on the edge in Sarasota’s pulsing trends.

We’ll start with Eduardo’s Nightlife Diary: “Downtown Eats and Club Beats.”

Whitley in her wooden dress.

It is Saturday night and I smell excitement brewing in the air. The gang consists of Kelly Campbell, who’s currently starring in Cloud Nine at the FSU/Asolo Conservatory for Actor Training; Whitley Floyd, a Ringling College of Art + Design graduate and the designer/ model for her wooden dress at Art Center Sarasota‘s recent iConcept Fashion Show; and Stavros Vichos, the young Greek guru in world politics and economics and recent Sarasota local. Sushi is on our minds as we gather downtown. We make the Drunken Poet Cafe our choice to kick off the evening. Quickly we sit outside underneath a light show displayed on the pavement … luckily none of us suffer from epileptic attacks. The ladies pick out the rolls for the table, including the Sexy Man Roll (there are two women and a pocket-sized gay at the table, you know) with tuna, avocado, tempura eel and “sexy sauce.” A few pieces of their tuna nigiri and curry puffs—stuffed with chicken, sweet potatoes, carrots, onions and curry powder—are also part of our meal, which was over before it began. It was all so delicious, and since we ate “family style,” we acted polite about sharing equal parts when really we all wanted to take all of our favorites. After the meal was done and the raving about the food was over, both Stavros and I had to try the Sexy Woman Roll, containing shrimp, eel tempura and veggies … once again, like savages we took it all in one breath. It was outstanding. A definite must-try.

Kelly Campbell, one of this evening's partners-in-crime.

Now stuffed out of our minds, we all trotted around the corner to check out the hot place everyone is talking about: State Street Eating House + Cocktails—and cocktails we surely had. The interior design reminded me of the meatpacking district of NYC. The Thomas Edison-style lightbulbs captivated me, as did the mirror behind the bar, which has been aged to give it a restored mid-century feeling. My first sighting was Mr. Terry McKee, a fellow style icon and fashion editor of Sarasota Herald-Tribune‘s Style Magazine, as well as co-owner and partner in leadership at Nuovo Salon Group. After a warm welcome, we sat at the bar’s very comfortable chairs. I am pleasantly surprised to see Heather Dunhill (another of my local fashion icons) sitting at the bar as well. She’s a fellow style blogger and columnist for Sarasota Magazine‘s Fashion IQ. The stylish crowd is going for the bar instead of a table. Do I sense a trend of bar dining?

The Bar at State Street Eating House.

After a quick scan, I spot other major players in the Sarasota social scene: Phil and Kim Mancini are dining tonight, and Katie and Michael Moulton are also in the restaurant enjoying a lively dinner with friends. Even the restauranteurs approve of State Street, and it’s no surprise. After a few questions to the bartender, I decide on the French 75 (later I learned that it is Kate Moss’ drink of choice): Champerz, a splash of gin and lemon. Kelly gets the Bramble (Gin, lemon, sugar syrup, tonic, muddled fresh blackberries and ice). Both are bold and refreshing. We pass them back and forth, taking sips of the delightful hand-made cocktails. A few minutes into our conversation, Heather comes visits both Terry and me with a bite of “something we must try”. Alas, it is fried fresh okra with white truffle oil! It is hot, it is tasty—it is what stylish people ate that night!

The drinks are drained—and the hostess’ shift has ended as well, so the gang and I decide to kidnap the gorgeous young lady and take her along for the ride. I proclaim my need to dance. My remedy is a visit to the “tranny club.” This temple of wigged goddesses and erotic shot boys does exist in our backyard. Its name is nothing out of the ordinary … Throb! We get in the “silver bullet,” the nickname for Stavros’ car, and after a 10-minute drive we find ourselves going through an industrial park to get to our final destination. The roughness of the surroundings just add a touch of bad-boy allure. Hidden away in the corner of the park, we find a bright pink exterior with a chandelier over the entrance. Leave it to us gays to make it over-the-top. The $5 cover charge is just a regular procedure at any of these establishments. Wristbands go on, and the door is opened for us to go in.

To my left are a couple of pool tables. I’ve done my rounds there—mostly losing, unless partnered up with a good player. To the front is a large bar stocked with yummies. A few colorful glasses in hand, which took no time to procure, and I am off to the dance floor in the second room. The lights are flashing, the music is pumping and I am ready to PARTY!

As a rule of thumb it is never fun to be the first to arrive nor the last to leave, so my entourage and I decide to hit the sack after our fun journey through some of Sarasota’s hotspots. From a delicious and exotic dinner at Drunken Poet, to the beautifully decorated space and tasty concoctions of State Street Eating House + Cocktails, to Throb, the new place for the alternatively-gendered, it was a memorable night and a great way to discover the different realms that exist in our community.
