In the tech world, project managers have a post-project meeting called a post mortem to step back and see what the hell happened. So that’s what SRiQ is going to do with the story we did about the intersection of Fruitville and Beneva Roads. To recap, the city of Sarasota received two bids for a piece of publicly-owned property at the corner of Beneva and Fruitville Road: one for $1.4 million-ish and another for $3 million. This isn’t the first time I have looked forward to a performance for months only to have my hopes dashed when things were not what I anticipated. (See my post from last week.) That’s right, everyone. This Week In Sarasota is taking you along. I know, I know. Saying “I like to travel” is [...]

The restaurant business is a demanding profession. Long hours, high expectations and a challenging, competitive local market are only a few of the obstacles operators must navigate in order to be successful. Not only that, but a new restaurant needs to establish an identity that sets it apart from other local restaurants. Easily said, but not easily done. Every once in a while a new restaurant comes along with some unique characteristics that quickly distinguish it from the others. The Sarasota location of The Carmel Café & Wine Bar is [...]

When Dianna Chenevert commissioned Mischa Philippoff to design a promotional poster for her then-fledgling New Orleans booking agency, Omni Attractions, in 1982, she certainly got the world’s attention. Featuring rare artist-submitted childhood photographs of living New Orleans music legends like Fats Domino, Earl King, Irma Thomas and Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown, the iconic Southern Stars poster put Omni Attractions on the map and became an invaluable photographic record of some of the greatest musicians to emerge from Louisiana. Among those musicians were members of The Dirty Dozen Brass Band — who, at the time, were relative newcomers to musical fame. [...]
